Herpes 1 (HSV 1) Testing
We test for herpes 1 (oral herpes) using the ELISA test. This stands for Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay. This test is designed to locate specific antibodies within your blood that fight against the herpes 1 virus. You can visit one of our certified testing centers to have a sample of blood drawn and tested.
Herpes 1 (HSV 1) Testing Information
According to the CDC, blacks are at a higher risk for contracting Herpes 1 than their white counterparts. Been tested? Read the important information below about Herpes 1 testing.
Our SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE testing method
The test for Herpes 1 requires only a small portion of blood that can easily be drawn by a lab technician at your local testing center. You don't need to do anything to prepare for the Herpes 1 test. Just show up and have your blood drawn.
The best time to be tested
The best time to be tested is between 4-6 weeks after sexual contact. This is when the test is most likely to be accurate. Herpes 1 symptoms include painful sores in your mouth, sometimes on your neck or face, and occasionally causes genital lesions. If you have had unprotected sex and are experiencing any of these symptoms, we strongly urge you to get tested.
Interpreting your test results
A negative result means no signs of Herpes 1 were detected in your body. A positive result means Herpes 1 was found in your blood, and we recommend you look into possible treatments.
Treatment of Herpes 1
Although there is no cure for this disease, it can be treated with antiviral drugs. These limit the symptoms and outbreaks you experience from the virus, and help prevent you from spreading Herpes 1 to any future sexual partners.
You should get tested if...
If you have participated in unprotected, or oral sex with someone who may have the disease, or live with someone who has Herpes 1, you should get tested. Because Herpes 1 is very common and often times has no apparent symptoms, it is very important that you get tested regularly, especially if you are sexually active.
Don't make the mistake of waiting to get tested for Herpes 1 (HSV 1).
Herpes 1 Testing - Don't Wait.
Unlike other STDs, Herpes 1 tends to have some obvious symptoms. If you have these symptoms, you need to get tested. Even if you don't have any symptoms, but think you might have been exposed, getting tested between 4-6 weeks after contact will provide you with the most accurate results.
Even if you get a negative result, we recommend you get retested 3 months after your initial test just to make sure you are not infected. There are certain factors that could result in a false negative result, so caution is always suggested.
If you feel you may have been exposed to other STDs, our 10 Test Panel is the way to go. This one test can diagnose if you are infected with syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV or hepatitis. It's the most efficient way to test for all the most common STDs.
