Herpes 2 (HSV 2) Testing Information

Our SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE testing method

The test for herpes 2 is called the ELISA test (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). This test analyzes your blood for antibodies to the herpes 2 virus. If you have the virus, these antibodies will be prevalent in your bloodstream. To get tested, a small amount of blood will need to be drawn. No preparation is needed to get tested for herpes 2. All you need to do is show up and get your blood drawn.

The best time to be tested

The best time to be tested depends on the person, but generally, the herpes 2 antibodies can't be detected until at least 3 weeks after infection. Because of this, we recommend you get tested somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks after sexual contact. If your initial test comes back negative, we recommend you come back in three months to be tested again.

Interpreting your test results

Your test results will come back as either positive or negative. A positive test means you have herpes 2, while a negative test means you do not have herpes 2. Occasionally there are some false positive test results, but this is rare.

Treatment of Herpes 2

There is no cure for this disease, but it can be treated with antiviral drugs. These drugs have been found to successfully limit the symptoms and outbreaks you experience from the virus, and help prevent you from spreading the virus to any future sexual partners.

You should get tested if...

If you have participated in unprotected, or oral sex with someone who may have the disease, or live with someone who has herpes 2, you should get tested. Common symptoms of herpes 2 include small painful blisters that break open, then scab over and heal in a few weeks. You may also experience flu like symptoms at the same time. If you experience these symptoms, you should get tested as soon as possible. You should also encourage any of your sexual partners to get tested as well.

Don't make the mistake of waiting to get tested for Herpes 2 (HSV 2).

Herpes 2 Testing - Don't Wait.

Like many STDs, herpes 2 may only show small symptoms that go undetected. Because of this, many infected persons are spreading the disease without even knowing. The only sure way to know if you have herpes 2 is through a blood test.

If you feel you may have been infected with herpes 2, please make an appointment for 4-6 weeks after the time you feel you may have been exposed. This time frame will produce the most accurate results. If you wait any longer than this, symptoms could get worse, including brain inflammation, blindness and a certain form of meningitis.

If you have participated in unprotected sex, you may be infected with herpes and other STDs. To check for all the most common STDs, we recommend our 10-Test Panel, which tests for both types of herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, and all three types of hepatitis.

If you are at risk, get tested today before it's too late.
